The presentation "Theoretical foundations of ethical banking. Lessons to be learned from Islamic Banking" introduces statements, which attempt to construct the perspective of a sense rationality, which grants a wholeness of actions, regarding banking practice. First, the question of the theoretical support of the normative banking practice is posed by the lack of normative understanding of the banking theory - profit maximization. Building on that, an insight in the sense rationality of Islamic Banking is granted by means of the communicatively verified interpretation of the Shari'ah'. This spiritual law is under constant construction by men. The abstract principles like social welfare, justice, distribution need the situational interpretation by the stakeholders. As a conclusion, a new taxonomy of ethical banking management is proposed. The distinctive feature of this taxonomy, which establishes an extension of the term ethical banking management, is the sense rationality of action. The advantage of this action-theoretical foundation lies within the harmonization of goals and means (utilitarian rationality), as well as value rationality. This, in turn, makes a contribution to the stabilization of the actual practice in the banking sector.
